The owl and the pussy cat, another story from Edward Lear’s Nonsense Omnibus, however for this project it became the crux of a short story. In an effort to better understand production design, students were given the task to transform one of Lear’s short poems into a budding animation.
Through this, I experienced a variety of production methods I hadn’t needed to worry about prior. From script writing and constructing synopses, stripping the story down to its core elements, to gestural drawing and creating character sheets to work out the exact details in their figure, there was much I hadn’t considered before.
I was initially hesitant to the subject, however soon discovered how it could help me improve my other skills as a designer. The attention to detail in character mock-ups, ensuring that all perspectives are considered. The ability to pull back a concept to its bare essence to ensure its ongoing viability. Most importantly the lessons in gesture drawing were highly beneficial, showing me how taking a step back letting yourself work can be just as important.
